A few months ago, after months and months of being sick of the poor braking performance.. I finally decided to upgrade the brake pump to a dual-layer servo. I have never actually seen the comparison before but it's said that B-line and M-line does not come with a bigger servo to accommodate the heavy sedan.. it's using the servo from a Gen-2 1.3.
So the search began.. After some research, I found out that workshops either cut a hole/knock the strut tower part of the chassis to accommodate the larger servo or they did not do it.. This is mainly due to the servo that they source (EVO3, SR20) being too big in side.. After some research, I found out that the servos from Honda Vi-Rs had a smaller size but still dual layer.. So decided to go with it..
Side by side comparison of the stock servo and the dual layer servo..
But still have to take out the servo and the pump as separate and install it one by one.. tedious job!
Braking performance felt very good after that :)
One very weird thing is that the check-engine light kept coming on after that... it's on n off.. a simple test using OBD-II found out that it's the brake switch.. parts still haven't arrive, still monitoring..
Update 09/11/12
Finally, the check engine light problem have seemed to be solved. Was told that the polarity of the brake switch was causing the problem and so I switched the positions and after the 3rd start (1st and 2nd were quick ones, probably ECU haven't detect it), the CEL light is gone!
Update 10/11/12
CEL Light came up again :(
Update 01/22/13
Finally, the problem is solved. Turns out that the brake switch isn't adjusted nicely so when the brake is released, it will not fully touch the sensor. A simple adjustment of the sensor had solved it. Million thanks to Ben (comments as below) who solved the issue.
Hi Wesley, I'm planning to do the same upgrade as yours, regarding the check engine light, did you manage to solve it? Mind to provide some info so I can discuss it with the foreman during the brake servo upgrade, many thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Ben, so far I have not been able to solve the problem. Have let the authorized SC to check and changed the brake switch but still it pops up. Perhaps its something stuck in the pedal (i have not gone down to check that). But so far I have not heard it from other people who upgraded so I think it's just a mistake during installation by my foreman.
ReplyDeleteI just got it replaced and the check light is off and on too, the mechanic had remove the battery terminal to reset the ECU, hopefully it doesn't come out again
ReplyDeleteI finally got it solved, it is the break oil cover socket polarity, try to switch positive and negative opposite and the light did not on again : )
ReplyDeleteHey, I just got a call and he told me the same thing! Wonder if you were the car that had problems after installation too? I have switched the two polarities and on the check engine light is gone. Million thanks!
ReplyDeleteYeah is his name Mr. Ariff? And you fix it in the workshop at Bangi?
ReplyDeleteYup. Found him through mudah.my. Nice guy. Didn't expect him to call me back regarding the issue. Yes I had it fixed in Bangi. I think that workshop does alot of persona.:)
ReplyDeleteBad news, the light came back again when I was driving, truly disappointed.
ReplyDeleteSeriously? I will take a drive later and see whether it happens or not..
ReplyDeleteYou are right. It came on after awhile of driving. Haih, but it's good to know that i'm not the only one. haha.
ReplyDeleteDid your mechanic use OBD to reset/disable the check engine light previously?
ReplyDeleteNope.. I have the OBD-II scanner with me so used it to read the code and disable the check engine light. The check engine light came on after a day when I fitted the dual layer servo actually. How about your case? what do you plan to do?
ReplyDeleteDid you change the brake switch? My mechanic suggest me to change it, or maybe I will go back to the workshop at Bangi to swap it back to original
ReplyDeleteYup.. actually the service centre thought it's faulty and changed it for me. But after awhile the problem came back.. I do not really know how or where the brake switch is located actually. I kinda like the braking feel now. Very sad case if have to revert to stock....
ReplyDeleteWill you consider return that and try Gen2 1.6 brake servo? I am planning to do so but worry the check light will come back
ReplyDeleteMaybe.. perhaps change back to stock first.. then see where is the problem, then only proceed to change. I did notice one of my LED at my rear brake lights being quite dim when the check engine light is on though. And speaking about going through the trouble of reinstalling the brake servo just puts me off. Haih. Unless the servo is free . hahhaa.
ReplyDeleteWhen are you going back to the workshops to swap back to original? Honestly after this I won't be back to the workshop anymore, after the job is done, I went back to the workshop 2 times after 3km driving due to the check light, but there's nothing they can do, just unplug battery to reset ECU, when I ask them, they said never encounter such problem before, was thinking are they hiding the truth..
ReplyDeleteHave to find the time to go.. I think will easily spend the whole day there. Ive been living with this problem for 2 months+ now. Sometimes get fedup but for me the braking is important though.... Resetting the ECU only avoids the problem for awhile until the ECU detects it again. Adoi. Ive not sent the car to let other workshops check though. Btw, can i have your email? so that in case i have any news i can contact you :)
ReplyDeleteSure, you can reach me at benny_cks(a)hotmail.com, kindly update me if any miracle happens :D
ReplyDeleteI'll be back next month to get it revert to stock.
Alright man.. do update me on the status after you've reverted to stock too. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Wesley, do you remember just after they replace the brake servo, your rear brake light is on even the brake pedal is not pressed? Then the mechanic adjust the brake light switch to make it back to normal?
ReplyDeleteAre you using Whatsapp? Perhaps you can email me your contact number as well
ReplyDeleteYes.. I do remember that.. He adjusted it to make it back to normal. Perhaps that's the cause of the problem? The light's up again now after 2 days of sudden disappearance. I've emailed you my contact number :)
ReplyDeleteYa I'm thinking that's the cause too! Because the brake switch position now is being adjusted before, perhaps the servo should be adjusted instead of brake switch, will you ask your mechanic to check again?
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I didn't think of that .. I'll bring it to my mech to check it tomorrow. Hopefully good news! And oh ya, whenever the CEL light comes up, I do notice one of my right rear brake light's LED being dim.. if there's no CEL then it's bright again, are you facing this too?
ReplyDeleteWaiting for your good news :D
ReplyDeleteI never check the brake light dim when check engine light is on, no chance to do it now because I'm working overseas, will be back on next month
My mech refused to check.. asked me to go for OBD scanning.. But i've already scanned it myself -.-
ReplyDeleteWhich workshop you've been to? Its real bad for it's kind of customer service..
ReplyDeleteIt's my regular mech. Ive asked around and they all will ask me to go and check with OBD .. will need money if let them check, which i already know the prob.-.-
ReplyDeleteHi Wesley, I've checked with another Persona Elegance driver, he said after swapped brake servo, the rear brake light doesn't light up like ours, hence his mechanic never adjust the brake switch, and his car is working fine without the check engine light on, perhaps we can bring our original servo to mechanic, ask him to adjust our Virs servo to same position as original servo.
ReplyDeleteHi.. thanks for the feedback.. I think i will try to get the car back to the same mechanic and get him to adjust the brake switch. Did the mechanic at Bangi readjust the brake switch after the CEL came on? I did he did minor adjustments for mine for the brake threshold position to reduce the freeplay. Maybe that's causing it.
ReplyDeleteNo he did not re-adjust the brake switch after the CEL light on, I feel that they are not willing to find out the problem, just install and go..but since now we found a possible solution maybe can go back to them, when are you planning to go?
ReplyDeleteHmm.. i think i might go next wednesday around 2-3pm or the following Monday on the 9th .. Don't really have much known persona workshops around my place to i guess i'll head back and let them adjust it again..
ReplyDeleteDo remember to bring your original servo for position measurement, and update me if successful : )
ReplyDeleteBro.. I haven't been able to find time to go to the workshop. Will update you soon if successful..
ReplyDeleteHi Wesley, Finally! My problem has been solved, and test driven hundreds of KM's without engine check light on, what my mechanic did is adjust the brake switch to let it pop out a little, then using obd to erase check engine light, it takes less than 10 minutes to get it done, extremely satisfying now, but too bad, last night my rear power window regulator broke and car in workshop again =(
ReplyDeleteWow! that's great to hear! Mine went off for 2 weeks and I thought it was over then it came back up again!
ReplyDeleteWhere is your mechanic located? I've been asking workshops around here but they all suggested me to either change the switch or take it back to proton. The switch has been warrantied before so i don't think that's the problem... Perhaps I can let your mech adjust ?:) About the power window, it happened to me 3 days after i got my car, did you send it back for warranty? I hear there's been one batch of regulators which is faulty..
His location is in Damansara Uptown, shop name Y.P Auto, you can look for Ah Fatt, and I did send back for warranty but they say ordered the power window regulator and need 2 to 3 weeks.
ReplyDeleteOkie, i'll try to look for the shop. Is it 'YP AUTO TECHNIQUE SDN. BHD.'? How much did it cost btw?
ReplyDeleteWhoa, 3 weeks? Then what will happen to your car? Did they set it back up? Really disappointing service from proton.
Yeah that's the shop name, remember to look for Ah Fatt, cost around RM80-130..
ReplyDeleteProton they seal up my mirror temporary until the power window regulator arrives..ya their regulator is common problem but they never standby any stocks
Hi Ben! Just came back from the shop. Finally the problem is gone.. He had adjusted to let it pop up so that the brake switch will sense the brake.. Took me awhile to find the shop but finally got it done =) Thanks very much! He's a nice champ too.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that yours is solved! Now we have better brakes without the check light on, Haha!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! I really did feel very very satisfied with the car for the first time after I had it done. Kudos to YP Auto, wonderful thing just a simply adjustment can do. And million thanks to you bro!
ReplyDeletehi guys. can u share your virs servo type?. i want to change the servo too. can share with picture ..
ReplyDeleteHi, I've installed the honda ek virs servo into my wira. u see on this link: http://www.mudah.my/Master+brake+pump+servo+double+layer+civic+EK+VIRS-22724777.htm
